James Gunn Speaks Out on Henry Cavill’s Exit as Superman: “It Was Really Unfair”

James Gunn has finally addressed one of the most talked-about decisions in the DC Universe reboot—why Henry Cavill was let go as Superman. In a candid interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn laid out the behind-the-scenes timeline, revealing the “unfair” circumstances that led to Cavill’s abrupt exit, just months after the actor had officially announced his return to the role.

Cavill, who first donned the cape in 2013’s Man of Steel and appeared in several follow-ups including Batman v Superman, Justice League, and a brief cameo in Black Adam, had publicly confirmed in October 2022 that he was back as Superman. However, Gunn revealed that this announcement came before he and Peter Safran had officially signed on to lead DC Studios.

“The day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,” Gunn said. “And I’m like, ‘What is going on?’ We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman [with a new actor]. So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer.”

Gunn clarified that Cavill’s re-hiring had not come from the newly appointed DC Studios leadership but from another faction within the studio, which was attempting to push their own vision amid a leadership vacuum. “That was really unfortunate,” Gunn added. “There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people were trying to force their way.”

Despite the awkward situation, Gunn praised Cavill’s professionalism and grace in handling the bad news. He and Safran opted to speak with Cavill personally.

“We sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it,” Gunn shared. “He said, ‘The only thing I ask is that I’m able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s a class act.’”

Cavill eventually made his own announcement via Instagram in December 2022, writing:

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

The actor added that he “respected” Gunn and Safran’s decision to build their own universe and thanked fans for their support, closing with, “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will.”

When podcast host Josh Horowitz asked Gunn whether Cavill could appear in another DC role in the future, the Guardians of the Galaxy director was clear:

“Absolutely not [too confusing]. I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something.”

Meanwhile, Superman—Gunn’s official debut in the rebooted DC Universe—released on July 11, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. Gunn revealed that casting Corenswet was a straightforward process:

“David was the second audition that I looked at out of hundreds of people. So from the very beginning, I’m like, ‘Well, if we don’t find somebody better, I think we found this guy.’”

Joining Corenswet in the film are Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and other notable stars including Anthony Carrigan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.

DC Studios has an ambitious roadmap ahead. Supergirl and Clayface are both set to hit theaters in 2026, followed by The Batman: Part II in 2027. On the streaming side, fans can expect Peacemaker Season 2 on HBO Max this August, alongside upcoming titles like Lanterns, a Blue Beetle animated series, and a Teen Titans movie.

Though Cavill’s time as Superman has come to an end, both he and James Gunn have left the door open for future collaborations—proof that even in a superhero universe full of reboots and reimaginings, mutual respect still takes center stage.
